Hey there. Which tool are you using? And what do you have it doing?

For example:  Lets say that you are using the Boxin Assistant on a slow computer. When it is first installed, by default, it does nothing.  It just changes the display from stopped to started and then sits there.  This should have no more impact on performance than opening notepad.

But, if you add a heal then it will check the color at that spot every second.  Now a second in modern computer processors is a loooong time, so it is sitting idle 99% of the time even after doing this. If you add 10 heals then it will check 10 spots on the screen every second.  Now, on a normal computer this is nothing noticable.  Our main healers easily run 20+ heals, several combat actions, visual triggers for cures and more on systems with 2 gig of ram with a fps of 30-40ish. Try increasing the lag-o-meter a few hundred (ms).

Having it read a big log file from a slow hard drive could slow the sytem... If you have it reading the game log file then this may be the problem.  Turn the log off or change it to read a text file instead of the game log and see what happens. We use Pearl Link these days mostly so there is no log file involved.

Getting the most out of what you have: Something helpful may be to go to START > RUN type msconfig and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything there, save and reboot.  Get your processes down to 20ish ( if XP ) by disabling unneeded items.  On a boxin machine that is strictly for gaming, and not internet use, disable the virus scanner and firewalls ect.  These will just steal resources that it could use somewhere else.  When a computer reaches the point that it only exists to scan it self you should do it a favor and unplug it.  Wink

Hope some of this helps, but if not, give me some more information to go on.

Thank you. I will begin implementing this information immediately. However I will throw some more info at you for your comments.

My wizzy only responds to the log file. I'm not sure where to make it look at just the text. That computer started lagging only when I have 1 visual response which is to tell me when he has Full Mana.

The cleric is a different story many heal settings and visual setting.

Interestingly this will speed both systems up for a short while:

Mouse movement.

Yup if I move the mouse both systems will catch up on auto follow and respond expeditiously except that it turns off your program for about 8 seconds. (I adjusted this).

Over all however I have alot of fun with your tool and I enjoy the programming.

Any other thoughts are welcome.

Wildice.

A couple of things:

* On the visual trigger you have set to notify you if the wizard is full mana? Set the recast to 5 seconds so it is not constantly looking for it. Set all recasts to at least 2 seconds for testing.

* Try the Control Assistant demo and link them to the boxin assistant through Pearl Link, then disable the log file entirely.  See if the performance improves.  You can watch the video on the wiki page on how to set up pearl link if you need to. It is pretty simple.

Hope this helps :)

The Wizzy is actually set for a 2 minute recast time on the Full Mana report. But I also notice that I have it looking for a visual que for join group. Which has a much quicker scan time . . . I will try increasing the recast on that.

I suspect the log file isn't the problem. I can teleport to an empty zone "Greater Faydark" where there is nothing creating the log file except my own activities and the issue still occurs. If you have different reasoning on this please let me know and I will pursue the pearl link idea. . .

Results:

I changed the lag o'meter by about 500 (ms) and I also turned off a few things within msconfig. The do believe I can see an improvement but not amazing. (snort) and of course I made all the changes at once so I now have no idea what change truely helped. . . (wizzy follows better . . . cleric still sucks . . . hehe)

Other options list:

I'm not sure how well you know EQ but if you are familiar with the graphics settings would there be any settings I could turn off which might help the situation?

One other shot in the dark:

The first version I downloaded and used was 6.0 -- now 6.06 -- could there possibly be a setting / feature I can turn off within 6.06 to help. I don't remember having this issue when I first started using your program.

FYI:

I'm really happy with the program, don't want you to get the wrong idea, would love to just tweek what ever I can, actually the auto follow issue really is the only problem I'm having. Moving the mouse solves the problem but sometimes I forget and my boxed characters loose track of my main toon and run down the hall into a nasty room full of mobs. . . which is really nasty when its the cleric . . . resurrection runs . . . etc etc etc you know the routine.Cool

thanks for all your help. I'm gonna try tweeking the wizzy with a larger recast time on that one visual setting and reply with the results.

On the log file: Even though nothing may have changed, it still has to read the file just to check. On a fast computer this is nothing, but on a slow one, it could be draining.

On the graphics settings for everquest, I am not sure. But certainly set them as low as possible. Generally the smaller the resolution that you run, the better the frame rate. The lower the texture detail, the better... It may take trial and error to get something that works.

Question:

With regard to the control assistant: do INactive EQ1 windows except keystroke inputs?

I was thinking I might just use my main computer to run the cleric in the back ground.

I'll experiment with the log file next.

As of now, I have not been able to send keys or mouse clicks to an inactive window in EQ1, or EQ2.  Games that I know accept them:  WoW, Vanguard...

Try using pearl link instead of the log file. Set the log file to something else and uncheck all the log settings and then test your auto follow.

How much RAM is in this machine? Typically it is the biggest bottle neck and usually pretty cheap to buy at newegg.com.

I noticed one of our machines slowed down yesterday and got jerky.  I checked the log file, and the SETTINGS > LOG FILE > Auto erase was unchecked.  The log file had grown over 25 meg.  The machine was struggling to read through it, watch the screen and run the game.  After checking the Auto Erase and clearing the log it smoothed out and was fine.  This may be what is happening to you.
